How to Calculate Zakat on Gold & Silver (2026)

Zakat on gold and silver is one of the most clearly established obligations in Islamic jurisprudence. Both precious metals are explicitly mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah as zakatable wealth. The correct calculation depends on your gold's purity (karat), weight unit and your Madhab.

"And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment."
— Surah At-Tawbah (9:34)

The Gold Zakat Formula

Gold Zakat Calculation Formula
Pure Gold Weight (g) = Total Weight × (Karat ÷ 24)
Gold Value = Pure Weight × Gold Price per Gram
Zakat = Net Gold Value × 2.5%

Example: You own 100g of 22K gold jewellery. Pure gold = 100 × (22÷24) = 91.67g. At PKR 43,254/g, value = 91.67 × 43,254 = PKR 39,65,699. Zakat = 39,65,699 × 2.5% = PKR 99,142.

How to Calculate Zakat on Silver

Silver Zakat follows the same 2.5% rate but uses a different Nisab: 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. At current market prices, the silver Nisab is far lower in monetary value than the gold Nisab. The Hanafi school uses the silver Nisab when a Muslim owns a mix of assets — ensuring more Muslims qualify to fulfil their Zakat obligation.

Silver Zakat Formula
Silver Nisab = 612.36g (52.5 tola)
Zakat = Total Silver Value × 2.5%

Gold vs Silver Nisab — Which to Use?

If you only own gold, use the gold Nisab (87.48g). If you own a mix of assets (gold + silver + cash + investments), the Hanafi school uses the silver Nisab as the trigger threshold. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools use the gold Nisab as the general standard. Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab to err on the side of caution.

📅
When is Gold Zakat Due?
Gold Zakat is due once a full lunar year (Hawl) has passed since your gold first met or exceeded the Nisab. If your gold drops below Nisab during the year and rises again, a new Hawl begins from that date.
💍
What About Jewellery I Wear Daily?
Hanafi school: Zakat is due on ALL jewellery including daily-worn pieces. Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: jewellery worn regularly is exempt — only stored or investment jewellery is zakatable. Our calculator handles this with the Madhab selector and worn jewellery field.

🏅
Gold Coins, Bars & Inherited Gold
Gold coins, bullion bars and inherited gold are all zakatable if they meet the Nisab and Hawl conditions. Inherited gold starts a new Hawl from the date you take possession. Gold stored in a bank locker is treated the same as physically held gold.

Zakat on Gold Jewellery — Madhab by Madhab

The four major schools of Islamic thought differ on whether worn gold jewellery is zakatable. Our calculator handles all four positions automatically.

Hanafi School
Pakistan · India · Turkey · Central Asia · Most widely followed
💍 All Jewellery Zakatable
In the Hanafi school, Zakat is obligatory on all gold and silver jewellery, including pieces worn daily. There is no exemption for personal jewellery. The silver Nisab (612.36g) is used for mixed assets, ensuring more Muslims qualify to pay Zakat.
Shafi'i School
Malaysia · Indonesia · East Africa · Egypt
💍 Worn Jewellery Exempt
In the Shafi'i school, gold jewellery worn regularly is exempt from Zakat. Only stored, investment or occasionally worn jewellery is zakatable. The gold Nisab (87.48g) applies. Enter only stored gold in the calculator.
Maliki School
North Africa · West Africa · Morocco
💍 Worn Jewellery Exempt
The Maliki school exempts regularly worn jewellery from Zakat, similar to the Shafi'i position. Gold coins, bars and investment pieces remain subject to the standard 2.5% Zakat rate above the gold Nisab threshold.
Hanbali School
Saudi Arabia · Qatar · Gulf countries
💍 Worn Jewellery Exempt
The Hanbali school, dominant in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, also exempts regularly worn personal jewellery. Gold held for investment, trade or storage is fully zakatable. Enter only your stored and investment gold when using this school.

Zakat on Gold & Silver FAQs

The most commonly asked questions about calculating Zakat on gold and silver, answered clearly.

What is the Nisab for gold in 2026?
+
The Nisab for gold in 2026 is 87.48 grams of pure gold (7.5 tola). At current 2026 prices, the gold Nisab is approximately $13,570 USD / PKR 37,83,750 / £9,963 GBP / ₹12,55,485 INR / SAR 50,826. Use our live Nisab calculator for today's exact figure.
How many grams is one tola of gold?
+
1 tola = 11.6638 grams exactly. This is the traditional South Asian gold weight unit used in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. To convert: multiply tola by 11.6638. The gold Nisab of 7.5 tola = 7.5 × 11.6638 = 87.48 grams. Our calculator handles this conversion automatically when you select "Tola" as the weight unit.
How is Zakat calculated on 22K gold jewellery?
+
For 22K gold, multiply the total weight by 22/24 = 0.9167 to get pure gold equivalent. Example: 50g of 22K gold = 50 × 0.9167 = 45.84g of pure gold. Multiply by today's 24K gold price per gram, then calculate 2.5% of that value as Zakat. Select "22 Karat" from the dropdown in our calculator and it handles this automatically.
Is Zakat due on gold jewellery I wear every day?
+
Hanafi school: Yes, Zakat is due on ALL jewellery including daily-worn pieces — there is no exemption. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools: No, regularly worn personal jewellery is exempt from Zakat. In our calculator: Hanafi users leave the "worn jewellery" field at 0 (everything counts). Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali users enter the value of regularly worn pieces in that field to deduct it.
What is the difference between gold Nisab and silver Nisab?
+
Gold Nisab = 87.48g (~$13,570 in 2026). Silver Nisab = 612.36g (~$1,596 in 2026). The silver Nisab is far lower in monetary value. The Hanafi school uses silver Nisab for mixed-asset calculations. If you own only gold, use gold Nisab. If you have gold + silver + cash + investments, Hanafi scholars apply the silver Nisab to ensure more qualifying Muslims pay Zakat.
Is Zakat due on gold coins and gold bars?
+
Yes — gold coins, gold dinars and gold bars are fully zakatable across all four Madhabs without exception. There is no exemption for investment gold or stored gold. If your gold coins or bars meet the Nisab (87.48g / 7.5 tola) and have been in your possession for one full lunar year, Zakat at 2.5% of current market value is obligatory.

+
At 2026 PKR prices: 1 tola = PKR 504,500. Zakat = 504,500 × 2.5% = approximately PKR 12,613 per tola. However, Zakat is only obligatory if your total zakatable wealth (gold + other assets) meets the Nisab. Enter your exact holdings in our calculator above for the precise amount.

+
