What is Nisab — and Why Does It Matter?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that makes Zakat obligatory in Islam. If your total net zakatable assets — gold, silver, cash, savings and business goods — equal or exceed the Nisab and remain so for one full lunar year (Hawl), then Zakat at 2.5% of that total becomes a religious obligation.

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا
"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase."
— Surah At-Tawbah (9:103)

Gold Nisab vs Silver Nisab — What's the Difference?

Islam established two standards for Nisab — one based on gold and one on silver. The Prophet ﷺ set the gold Nisab at 20 mithqal (87.48g) and the silver Nisab at 200 dirhams (612.36g). Today, these two thresholds carry very different monetary values.

Nisab Thresholds — 2026
🥇 Gold Nisab = 87.48g (7.5 tola) of pure 24K gold
🥈 Silver Nisab = 612.36g (52.5 tola) of silver
Zakat = Net Wealth above Nisab × 2.5%

Which Nisab to Use?

If you own only gold, scholars across all Madhabs agree you use the gold Nisab (87.48g). If you own a combination of assets — gold, silver, cash, savings and business goods — the Hanafi school applies the silver Nisab as the minimum threshold, which is significantly lower in monetary terms and ensures more Muslims fulfil their Zakat obligation.

The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools generally use the gold Nisab as the primary standard for mixed assets. Many contemporary scholars, particularly in South Asia, recommend using the silver Nisab out of caution to benefit the recipients of Zakat.

What is Hawl — the Lunar Year Condition?
Hawl is the condition that your wealth must remain at or above the Nisab for a complete lunar year (approximately 354 days). Zakat is not due until this full year has elapsed. If your wealth drops below Nisab at any point during the year, the Hawl resets from the date it rises above Nisab again.

What Assets Count Towards Nisab?
Gold, silver, cash, bank savings, business inventory intended for sale, stocks (market value), rental income savings and receivable debts all count. Exclude: your home, car, personal belongings, tools of trade and debts you owe to others.

Why is the Silver Nisab Much Lower?
At 2026 market prices, the silver Nisab (~PKR 4.45 lac) is roughly one-ninth of the gold Nisab (~PKR 37.8 lac). This difference means far more Muslims qualify to pay Zakat when the silver standard is applied — which is why the Hanafi school favours it to ensure wider wealth redistribution in the Ummah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nisab Calculator FAQs

Clear answers to the most common questions about Nisab, Zakat eligibility and how to calculate your threshold.

What is Nisab in Islam?
+
Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth above which Zakat becomes obligatory. It is defined as 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. If your net zakatable wealth equals or exceeds this amount and has remained so for one full lunar year (Hawl), Zakat at 2.5% is due.
What is the Nisab for gold in 2026?
+
The gold Nisab in 2026 is 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of pure 24K gold. At current market prices this equals approximately PKR 37,83,750 / $13,570 USD / £9,963 GBP / ₹12,55,485 INR / SAR 50,826. Use our calculator above for today's exact figure.
What is the Nisab for silver in 2026?
+
The silver Nisab in 2026 is 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. At current prices this equals approximately PKR 4,45,253 / $4,249 USD / £3,063 GBP / ₹1,45,607 INR / SAR 5,866. The silver Nisab is significantly lower in monetary value than the gold Nisab.
Which Nisab should I use — gold or silver?
+
If you own only gold: use the gold Nisab (87.48g). If you own mixed assets (gold + silver + cash + savings + investments): the Hanafi school applies the silver Nisab, while the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools use the gold Nisab. Many scholars recommend the silver Nisab to err on the side of caution and benefit more Zakat recipients.
How many grams is 7.5 tola? And what is 1 tola in grams?
+
1 tola = 11.6638 grams exactly. Therefore: 7.5 tola = 87.48 grams (gold Nisab) and 52.5 tola = 612.36 grams (silver Nisab). Our calculator accepts all three units — tola, gram and troy ounce — and converts automatically.
Does cash and savings count towards Nisab?
+
Yes. Cash, bank savings, receivable amounts and business inventory intended for sale all count towards the Nisab calculation. You combine the monetary value of all zakatable assets — gold, silver, cash, savings and investments — and then deduct short-term debts. If the net total reaches the Nisab, Zakat is obligatory.
Does my house or car count towards Nisab?
+
No. Your primary home, personal vehicle, clothing, household furniture and tools used in your profession are exempt from Zakat and do not count towards the Nisab. Only wealth held for saving, investment or trade qualifies. A second property purchased for rental income or resale may be zakatable — consult a scholar for your specific situation.
What is Hawl — does my wealth need to stay above Nisab for a year?
+
Yes. Hawl is the condition that your wealth must remain at or above the Nisab for one complete Islamic lunar year (~354 days). Zakat is calculated on the wealth held at the end of the Hawl year, not on every fluctuation throughout the year. If your wealth drops below Nisab during the year, the Hawl resets from the date it rises above Nisab again.
