How to Calculate Zakat on Gold & Silver (2026)
Zakat on gold and silver is one of the most clearly established obligations in Islamic jurisprudence. Both precious metals are explicitly mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah as zakatable wealth. The correct calculation depends on your gold's purity (karat), weight unit and your Madhab.
The Gold Zakat Formula
Gold Value = Pure Weight × Gold Price per Gram
Zakat = Net Gold Value × 2.5%
Example: You own 100g of 22K gold jewellery. Pure gold = 100 × (22÷24) = 91.67g. At PKR 43,254/g, value = 91.67 × 43,254 = PKR 39,65,699. Zakat = 39,65,699 × 2.5% = PKR 99,142.
Gold Karat Purity Table

| 10K | 41.67% | 41.67g | Budget jewellery (USA) | ⚡ If above Nisab |
How to Calculate Zakat on Silver
Silver Zakat follows the same 2.5% rate but uses a different Nisab: 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. At current market prices, the silver Nisab is far lower in monetary value than the gold Nisab. The Hanafi school uses the silver Nisab when a Muslim owns a mix of assets — ensuring more Muslims qualify to fulfil their Zakat obligation.
Zakat = Total Silver Value × 2.5%
Gold vs Silver Nisab — Which to Use?
If you only own gold, use the gold Nisab (87.48g). If you own a mix of assets (gold + silver + cash + investments), the Hanafi school uses the silver Nisab as the trigger threshold. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools use the gold Nisab as the general standard. Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab to err on the side of caution.
