Fitrana — The Eid Obligation That Comes Before Everything Else

There is a particular urgency to Fitrana that distinguishes it from annual Zakat. While Zakat can technically be paid at any point during the year, Fitrana has a hard deadline — before the Eid prayer begins. Miss that window and it becomes a qada (compensatory payment) rather than Zakat ul Fitr.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made Fitrana obligatory as both a purification for the fasting person and an act of generosity toward the poor — ensuring they too can celebrate Eid with food and dignity.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat ul Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from vain talk and inappropriate conduct, and as food for the poor."
— Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 1609 (Hassan)

Who Must Pay?

Fitrana is unlike annual Zakat in one critical respect: there is no Nisab threshold. Any Muslim who has food or money beyond their own and their family's basic needs on the day of Eid must pay. The head of household pays for themselves, their spouse, minor children and any dependants they support financially.

Can Fitrana Be Paid in Cash?

The Hanafi school permits — and often recommends — paying Fitrana as its cash equivalent. Calculate the value of the required food quantity at local market prices and give that amount to eligible recipients. In contemporary practice across most Muslim communities worldwide, cash Fitrana is the norm.

Who Do I Pay Fitrana For?
The head of household pays for: themselves, their spouse, their minor children, elderly parents under their care, and any other dependants they financially support. A family of 6 requires 6 separate Fitrana payments.
🤲
Who Can Receive Fitrana?
Fitrana is given to the same eight categories as regular Zakat — primarily the poor (fuqara) and needy (masakin). Giving to trusted organisations that distribute to genuine beneficiaries is valid.

Higher Food = More Reward
All four are valid — wheat is the minimum, dates and raisins carry higher monetary value. Several scholars recommend choosing a more valuable food type when affordable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fitrana FAQs

The specific Fitrana questions that come up every Ramadan — answered clearly.

What is Fitrana and is it the same as Zakat?
+
Fitrana (Zakat ul Fitr) is a separate obligation from annual Zakat. While annual Zakat is based on accumulated wealth above Nisab held for a full lunar year, Fitrana is a fixed per-person charity due at the end of Ramadan before the Eid prayer. It has no Nisab threshold — anyone with food or money beyond their day's basic needs must pay.
What is the difference between Hanafi and other Madhab rates?
+
The key difference is in the wheat standard. The Hanafi Madhab uses half a sa' of wheat (approximately 1.75kg) per person. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools use one full sa' of wheat (approximately 2.5kg) per person. For barley, dates and raisins, all four Madhabs use one full sa' (approximately 2.5kg).
I fasted only part of Ramadan due to illness — do I still pay Fitrana?
+
Yes. Fitrana is obligatory based on being a Muslim who possesses sufficient means on the day of Eid — not on completing a full fast. The obligation is tied to your status as a Muslim on Eid al-Fitr, not your fasting record.
Do I pay Fitrana for a child born just before Eid?
+
Yes. If a child is born before the Eid prayer, Fitrana is due for that child. A child born after the Eid prayer does not have Fitrana due for that year, though it is recommended (mustahabb) to pay it as an act of gratitude.
Can I give Fitrana to relatives?
+
You cannot give Fitrana to people you are financially obligated to support — your spouse, minor children, and parents. However, you can give Fitrana to adult brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and other relatives who are genuinely poor or in need. This carries additional reward as it combines charity with maintaining family ties.
I forgot to pay Fitrana before Eid prayer — what do I do now?
+
Pay it immediately as qada (compensatory payment). While it loses its status as Zakat ul Fitr if paid after the Eid prayer, the obligation remains. Make sincere tawbah for the delay and pay it as soon as possible. Going forward, pay at least 1–2 days before Eid.
